detour: cappadoccia

Cappadoccia is the perfect detour from bustling Istanbul. A 45 minute flight from the capital (Turkish Airlines has an early morning and evening flight each day) Cappadoccia is close enough for a day trip or overnight journey while offering an entirely unique experience. Located in the heart of Turkey, the region is known for it’s lunar landscapes and cave dwellings. The 24 hours I  spent there can be seen through photos below…

The Sights: Goreme Open Air Museum and close up of cave church

The Sights: Imagination Valley

The Sights: Pasabag “fairy chimneys” and the Devrent Valley rock formations

The View: Uchisar Rock Castle view from Ahbap Konagi Cave Hotel

The Eats: server dressed in traditional Turkish garb selling traditional Turkish coffee, local ladies making authentic gozleme

The Goods: the ubiquitous Evil Eye charms

The Experience: sunrise hot air balloon ride over the valleys of Cappadoccia
